The average household septic system should be pumped every three years by a septic service professional. Residential septic tanks should not go more than five years without being pumped. There are several major factors that influence how often to pump your septic system:

• Number of bedrooms vs. number of people living in the home

• Total wastewater generated

• Volume of solids in wastewater

• Septic tank size

Septic systems are sensitive and regular maintenance is crucial. An easy rule of thumb to help avoid septic issues is not to flush anything besides human waste and septic rated toilet paper. Never flush items such as food, condoms, tampons, grease, paper towels, etc.. Check your filter to ensure it isn’t clogged.
